Received the SB degree (bachelor of science) in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering in 1989. The degree included a minor in history, concentrating on military history, and graduate classes in astrodynamics and space propulsion. Other classes included Fortran and C programming and systems design.

Worked in Space Systems Laboratory for two summers as an undergraduate researcher. In first developed testing equipment for prototype maintenance robots. In the other, reverse engineered analysis software to match design of a magnetoplasmadynamic thruster being developed by a student team. As an independent project developed a stand-alone orbital mechanics application for Mac OS.
