Laura's Handknit Socks

I finally got Karl's anniversary present, green cabled socks, done!

The cat was just DETERMINED to get into the picture, so we used him as a footstool.

For now on I only do cables in solid color yarn.

I've just finished these Cloverleaf Eyelet socks for Children in Common, as the pre-start sock with the Six Sox Knitalong.

These are for a Knitalong, which I'd never done before. There's apparently 200-some of us working on them now. The pattern is the Broadripple socks by Rob Matyska, published in the Knitty online magazine. They're even doing a raffle of prizes for those of us who get socks done by May 30th.

These are made with some blue and white variegated Opal yarn that I had around. Since the pattern was designed for sport weight, changes had to be made to use regular sock weight. The designer used a 56 stitch cast on for the sport weight, with 4 ripples around the sock, and advised a 72 stitch cast on for sock weight, with wider ripples. Now, this is for a "women's medium". After 3 babies, my feet are a bit wider.
So whereas most women's medium sockweight yarn patterns are a cast on of about 64 stitches, I *start* with 72. This pattern needs more, because it's not ribbed at all. So I went back to the original pattern and used 6 ripples around, so my cast on is 84. Largest cast on for a sock I've ever done. I think they're going to be nice.

Here's Maggie's rainbow socks, in the cloverleaf eyelet rib anklets.

Here's Brendan's Rainbow Very UnSad Socks. Rainbow regia yarn, done with a baby cable pattern, purple regia afterthought heel and toe. (56 stitch cast on. P1, *K2, P2* repeated until last 3 stitches per side, K2, P1. Every 4th row, RT instead of K2)

I just recently did this purple pair of socks for the CIC project with the Nicholas's Swirly Tube Socks pattern.

I've also done my first pair of cabled socks, which came out a bit smaller than I'd expected. Pictures and the pattern are here.

Self-striping Regia yarn, also in the blueberry waffle pattern. Oops, I bought 6ply when I thought I was buying 4 ply. Oh, well, it was a learning experience. They make good pad-around-the-house socks, and fit just fine, even if they are a little thicker.

I made a pair of socks for my friend Patrick, in return for some computer work he did for me. I used the blueberry waffle sock pattern.

I did tiger-striped socks as a present for my friend Tygerr. I neglected to take pictures before giving them to him, but he visited and wore them, and I snapped this then.

My second complete pair of socks is a birthday present for my friend Lynette. Here's the picture. Click here for more pictures and the pattern for these socks.

Just found these again - a pair of baby anklets I did for Maggie with my leftover yarn. My first try at short row heels. Well, perhaps it will work better later.

I've finally got it!

Here's my first completed *pair* of handknit socks. (My first sock is probably doomed to stay a singleton, as during the learning process we had me change needle sizes)

I finished these Wednesday. I wore them today, 2/14/03, for the first time.

I look forward to when I have enough handknit socks for everyday!
